dpkg -l | grep nvidia shows nothing after I have purged. I have purged all nvidia packages and reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-legacy-340xx several times and it always freezes on Setting up libgl1-nvidia-legacy-340xx-glx:amd64 (340.96-3) ... What info can I provide you?
