I can confirm this bug.
The heap of gnome-contacts eats up all memory.
This problem is also observed with evolution and empathy, because you are able
to import the contacts from there.
But the biggest problem here, as mentioned by

This bug has become rather critical for me; this makes my machine
unusable several times per day:
