After upgrading to current testing/stretch, the problem disappeared.
The versions for gdm3 and gnome-shell did not change from my previous mail.

- all of the local users were in the 'video' group for long,
- using lightdm works with no problem; I can even use the xfswitch-plugin
applet overriding gdmflexiserver as indicated in the Ubuntu documentation

Same problem here (on a desktop box, no VM or container) after upgrading my
testing box. I got the "Oh no..." screen every time.
Installing xserver-xorg-legacy did not help, even when I allowed "anybody"
and forced "yes" for "needs_root_rights".

I had the same bug, both on a desktop machine with the nvidia driver
and on a Virtualbox VM.
A workaround has been to install xserver-xorg-legacy (works at least
on the VM, I haven't tried on the other one).

Same problem here. Or at least the same logs (journalctl -u gdm.service

Instead of flickering immediate restarts I see the annoying

I had this problem too after the latest testing migration. Purging
weston allowed gdm3 to start for me...

Same problem here. Updating gdm3 to 3.18 results in a flickering screen.
(the X server is started over and over again)

After downgrading to 3.14 (testing) gdm3 does show the login prompt, but
gnome does not load.

After the update to 3.18 GDM3 does not allow me to login properly into my X
session. I just does not start. If I do a 'service gdm3 restart' in the tty
the only thing that happens is a flicker in the monitor.
