I tested on another machine (Dell Latitude D505) with Roaming workstation connected to the university LDAP and Kerberos infrastructure, and when I logged in on this machine, I did get the popup message from libpam-mklocaluser in kdm. No idea why it worked there, but not when I tested in a virtual
