The upstream issue in the GitHub tracker has been closed. While that
discussion isn't very conclusive, the related issues show that
upstream doesn't want to change these values either, and recommends to

This issue has also been reported upstream, I've set the forwarded URL
accordingly. There are no comments in the upstream issue though,
that's not very promising.

I don't know how many 'large' models there are.
As the documentation states, the netcdf library does not statically
define anything based on these arbitrary limits, so I believe there is
no impact on netcdf itself. Certainly exodus works fi

The exodus library uses the netcdf library for low-level data
storage.
Exodus requires NetCDF version 4.2.1.1 or later.
