I found the least invasive way to restore the actual default left_ptr cursor
from the Terminal. Issue the command:
xsetroot -xcf /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/cursors/left_ptr 24
Three other methods work (in my Debian Wheezy):
Alt+F2
r
[Enter]
Launch Applications => System Tools => Syste

Hi!
After quitting the program, the cursor image gets reset to the default
X.Org ‘X’ pointer shape. On awesome, just resetting the window manager
restores the cursor image.
