The unblessed reference is still present. The steps that I used, with results,
are as follows.
Run gcstar from the command line. The following warning message appears, along
with the gcstar window:

Dear Maintainer,
I recently installed gcstar on a new machine, and it hung while trying to use
the Import -> Barcode Scanner plugin. I tried running gcstar from the command
