You might try strace -f maxima.
But my suspicion is that you have some unusual security setting on your
computer. If you are using SElinux, for example, try disabling it.
maxima needs to
1) execute code from the .data section
2) unrandomize sbrk using the personality system call

Dear Maintainer,
when trying to run maxima, all I get is "unrecoverable error:
segmentation violation". This also happens when I try to
do "maxima --version" or "maxima --help".
This might be a sibling to bugs like #599981, now happening on amd64.
