I think you missed one point ... thumbpdf didn't have real problems,
I was simply reacting to the error messages you reported, since I didn't
have anything else to go on.

I think you missed one point ... thumbpdf didn't have real problems,
the problem was that it didn't realize that it is working in
tex mode and not in latex mode.

On the debian side we received a bug report that seems to be related to
texi2dvi/pf.
