I meant to exclude a hardware issue by trying Kubuntu.
As for the kernel... I could try to compile an old kernel myself, however I do
not know if that will work at all.

it seems I did not supply the correct version number when issuing the "found"
command to con...@bugs.debian.org... at least it complained in the reply:
"There is no source info for the package 'upower' at version '0.9.13-1' with
architecture ''
Unable to make a source version for version '0.

looks like a faulty battery or a kernel issue.
If you kill upowerd and then monitor the sysfs entries, do you still see
this behaviour?
