Hi,
The latest version of xclip in svn has a new -target command line
option which facilitates this.
E.g.
xclip -t image/jpeg -se c image.jpg # Copy the given JPEG into the clipboard
xclip -t image/png -se c image.png # Copy the given PNG into the clipboard

Well gimp should have not been the topic in this report. I wish I haved

Sorry, but how is this more useful than just using Gimp's own open
functionality, if you just put the image into the clipboard
