Package: emacs23
Version: 23.1+1-5
Severity: minor

Emacs running under X defaults to using DejaVu Sans Mono Book 12.
This is the default Monospace font in Debian so it appears to be the
correct selection for consistency, although most of GNOME uses a 10
point font rather than 12 for text. Using an LCD monitor with
Subpixel Smoothing and Full Hinting configured via
gnome-appearance-properties the GNOME applications render DejaVu Sans
Mono Book nicely. In Emacs however this and other fonts appear
thicker and darker than in GNOME applications. As a test case I write
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." in Emacs and in Gedit
configured to use DejaVu Sans Mono Book 12. The two applications
render the text differently. I suspect that Emacs is not using
Subpixel Smoothing or Full Hinting for the rendering.
