I believe this is the same bug as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/406036 . I get the same crash
with GTK_IM_MODULE=xim, but not with uim.
However, using uim has the weird side-effect that the close button
doesn't do anything

As mentioned, when I select the text tool to input some text and click
on the canvas, the program crashes. I have tested this on both i386 and
amd64 systems with identical results.
When I ran it from the terminal, I get this output :
