I have the same behavior after upgrading to KDE4 from Squeeze. There was
no issue on KDE3 from lenny. I have tried also to start with clean
profile. I have recent aspell installed.
However removing spelling checker avoided that situation.

I can confirm the issue, it is related to aspell being missing on the system.

The workaround is to manually disabled spell checking via Advanced Options:
