When I paste the paste ctrl-C is placed off screen. The next paste is
done at the cursor. This is not just screen painting, my code no longer
compiles because of the errors. It seems to have started after I
installed a MS wheel mous

It's like you are having some rendering problems, instead of a real
duplicate line.
Does it happen with latest gedit/2.22.3-1?

I've opened the file with another editor (vim): the file seems to be ok.
I've found that the compiling trouble was for a my error in the copy and
paste.
So now I think that the file has no (visible) problems and saving it has
in some way fixed the duplicate line problem.
Today I upgraded to gedit 2
