lftp already has the following options:
http:cache
http:cache-control
hftp:cache
hftp:cache-control
So you can precisely control the squid cache. E.g. turn off cacheing completely:
set http:cache off
(it adds two request headers: `Pragma: no-cache' and `C

I run into some problems though from time to time, when my squid has
cached a file and thus prevents lftp from downloading a newer
version until squid expires the cache.
With wget, I can use --no-cache to work around this
