I think you can now close this bug. :)
I completely uninstalled mysql, incl. mysql-client, mysql-server, mysql-common,
libmysqlclient12, php4-mysql, etc. I had done this before, except this time I
also removed the /var/lib/mysql directory. I then reinstalled all of these
packages and it

sorry, no answer, but a few questions:
- could you tell us more about what software you have interacting with mysql?
- it would be helpful to have the actual mysqld cmdline being called
(you can figure this out by placing a "set -x" minus the quotes at
the top of /usr/bin/mysqld_

This morning I upgraded mysql-server using apt-get on a box running
debian-sarge 3.1. Since then, mysqld fails to start. The following messages
appear in the syslog file:
