Well, /cdrom and /dev/cdrom is not the same thing. AFAIR to read a
dvd you need to access the device, but that could well be just for
the css authentication

The problem is that the user was not root.
If that was mentioned in the error messages, it would have saved lots
of head scratching. By the way, the user, not root, mounted the DVD.
