I guess the reason is that xorg's internal freetype2 library has the
bytecode interpreter disabled. There are patent issues around this, but
I hope it can be enabled by removing the comments, as stand-alone
freetype2 has it enabled too.
The file in question is
xc/extras/freetype2/include/freetype
I have also experienced this problem on both my desktop and my laptop after
migrating to X.org. The problem also occurs in programs like xfontsel as
well as emacs. KDE apps and gtk2 apps do not seem to be affected.
I can post my xorg.conf file, or any other information, if desired.

Firstly thank you for the new X.org packages. I just got them, restarted
gdm, logged back in, all looks brilliant.
Except xmms, which has horrid squiggly looking fonts in the main window
display and playlist. No problem I though
