I reproduced this bug on two more machines with deb-testing.
I'm used xfce4 4.16 as the DE from deb-testing.
I'm disabled at-spi via setting 'NO_AT_BRIDGE=1'. But when I enable
that, xpad still crashes.
Xpad was broken after the update about two weeks ago.

I cannot reproduce this, the program starts normally and works as
expected in testing. Any details to share, e.g. desktop environment
used, fresh install or update, did xpad work before?
Any output if you start the application from a terminal on your
desktop?
