This could maybe suggested in the error message.
I am surprised that the ethernet interface is operational after a modprobe
without the firmware.
If it is a hardware problem, I do not see why it doesn't show with the Mint
system. Moreover, if all is fine for a few minutes, the computer will go for
hours, using all the memory, without any panic. I will try to install a Mint
Debian on a native partition to see what happens.

Since the update of the kernel from 2.6.38-2 to 2.6.39-2, I cannot get my card
to work.
I have re-installed the package with the new kernel running.
With 2.6.38 kernel, the r8192se_pci.ko module activates the card. It is not
present with 2.6.39:
