y it hasn't been
happening for a while but I usually have two running in two different
X sessions with somewhere around 120 tabs open and it has been pretty
unresponsive lately.
Any more information that would be useful?

I did some more digging, compiling the "apt-get source"-gotten source
by hand with "./configure --prefix=/usr" and make; running from the
build areas resulted in a working libvirtd (even creating and booting
a VM).
Next I tried building a complete .d
