I have found a solution to this problem. Suspend and restore works if
nomodeset is added to the kernel boot line in grub and disable the
smart_kernel_intel options in:
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/98smart-kernel-video

Tonight, the Debian distribution issued some updates including
Evolution. I do not know which update fixed the problem but now the
conduits are working fine again.

When I try to change conduit settings I the gnome applet complains that
it cannot instantiate the conduit. Therefore the problem is that the
conduits fail to load rather than a sych problem.
Note: I have set this bug to a normal priority because I have switched
to kpilot until this is fixed but I
I included the wrong xorg.conf details. I have two Debian systems and
entered the bug report from the system with a different driver (nv)
which works fine. I will re-submit the but with the right driver and
xorg.conf information.
