i have just compiled and tested kernel 3.8.2.
It still hangs with a device connected to the USB 3.0 connector,
unless you use "i915.modeset=0" as a kernel parameter
Booting with the above option is also not a viable workaround,
as it badly affects video performance...

When the file is empty (nothing measured yet), the localc displays
window asking to select the appropriate import filter.
Unfortunately my hope, that the problem is solved was too early.
The freeze problem seems to be associated not with the i2c-smbus
neither with i2c-i801 drivers, but with DRM drivers: i915 and nouveau.

I have also verified, that with 3.5.2 booted with "pci=noacpi"
the command "#echo disk>/sys/power/state" correctly suspends system to disk.
The operation is correctly resumed if I power on the system later on with the
same kernel
and also with "pci=noacpi".
