I'm sorry (or glad??) to inform you that the bug vanished. It may be
closed.
Let me explain: I had some kernel oopses due to ecryptfs, but I didn't
think this had anything to do with gnome-applets. Nevertheless, after
deinstallation of ecryptfs and a reboot everything was back to normal

No matter whether files are in .local/share/Trash/files/ or not, both the trash
icon and the tooltip show an empty trash.
I recognized Bug #541787 (and alike). But in my case, there's no need
