I now believe that Qt 3.3.5 (or debian's configuration of this) may be part of the problem. I have just successfully compiled and used kst from SVN head on an kubuntu breezy installation. This uses gcc 4.0.1, Xorg, KDE 3.4.3, and Qt 3.3.4. There were no issues. My major remaining question is
