This usually happens with broken .Xdefaults settings, e.g.:
xdvi*geometry: 900x1000
instead of:
xdvi.geometry: 900x1000
You could check the resource settings with e.g.
$ appres XDvi xdvi | grep geom

Actually that's quite a good example for how such output *could* be
helpful if users didn't ignore it ;-) 'R' reloads the file, 'r' scrolls
