I have been able to confirm that things do work in version 2.3.0, although the
internal memory needs to be empty in order to view pictures from the SD card.
Therefore, my original bug does not need to be reported anymore to libgphoto,
but in debian an upgrade to 2.3.0 is still requ
Apparently, in version 2.3.1, pictures from SD memory will only show if the
internal memory is empty.
The problem is caused by the directory structure not being fetched correctly.

Ok, so I compiled 2.3.1 from source, and noticed the bug is actually NOT fixed
in that version... so now it's back to a bug report instead of an upgrade
request...
