The current version of pg_dump (and pg_dumpall too)in the package is not
compatible with the current version of PostgreSQL. Other tools in the package
(e.g. createdb) are up to date though.

I'm experiencing something similar, except that the entirety of X locks
up. I usually have to go to another computer and kill X. When I run
top, X is using up 80% to 95% of CPU time.
