I had the same problem.
Coud it be possible in future to keep /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.
It's a good way to mix system config with user config and is often used this
way in Debian phil
I have more informations now.
This trouble occurs only when the network is down.
Reproduce the trouble with an inexistant host was a wrong idea. Sorry.
Desactivating network on my Lenny Desktop doesn't give the same result. Timeout
is working.

When IMAP host is unreachable mutt is infinitly trying to connect.
I need to kill the process.
It's quite easy to reproduce this effect when pointing to a non existant host.
