l would like to use xgnokii there is a method to workaround
it described in sample gnokiirc provided with gnokii (and I think it

- code looks safe (thus I may still overlook something)

I think you incorrectly compile your program. Looking at gnokii-test.c
file you use:
gcc gnokii-test.c -lgnokii -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXpm -lX11
while you should:
gcc gnokii-test.c `pkg-config gnokii --libs` which should result with
somthing like:
gcc gnokii-test.c -L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/X11R6/
