it has been 1.5 years since the bug was reported.
As I'm hitting the bug everyday, I would like to ask if there was any

I think this should be handled outside finger (e.g. kernel or samba).
Finger should not be adapted to needs of specific applications (samba
in this case, but I'm sure there are more...)
One could be then perplexed by finger's behaviour when unknown
