I can confirm the bug with the Xorg radeon driver, and I can also confirm
that it can be solved by installing firmware-linux-nonfree.
It would be nice if it could be solved without the nonfree firmware, but I
pretty happy with the current solution.

It seems it was due to a conflict between the rt2870sta and the rt2800pci
modules.
Blacklisting rt2870sta solved the problem (both in Debian an Ubuntu).
