The problem can be caused by upgrading the kdm package. See bug #290625.

when upgrading from 2.1.23-1 to 2.2.23-8
apt-get upgrade | tee -a /var/log/some-upgrade.log

Installation: When answering the question if GNUnet daemon should start on
boot, I answer no and in /etc/default/gnunet it nevertheless says
LAUNCH_AT_STARTUP=true. [The latter overrides the default =false setting
in /etc/init.d/gnunet.]
