README.i8kutils.gz has it right, consistent with i8k.c.

The attached patch seems to have the intended effect; strace's exit
status is set to that of the ptraced process, or 1 if strace was
signalled. strace -p still exits with zero status.

The package is complicated due to inclusion of many sub-packages [0],
for one of which the source is not included in the original tarball
[1] and another is modified for the package [2]. Some more info is in
the README.Debian.
The current packaging diff leaves some room for improvement [3]. It

This patch explicit statement that there is a time limit; without
this, users are likely to reread the huge warning rather than quickly
aborting/suspending the process to investigate.

Not sure, I was of the impression this was just a typo. I noticed
(after installing 10+ window managers) that "awesome" was the only one

Thanks for the analysis. Why does it only affect aptitude sometimes
(after an upgrade is aborted)? Is that due to some cache? Why isn't
apt/itude using mmap (?)?
Out of curiousity, what kernel and hardware are you using?

I think that this should never happen. Did something break due to the
ldconfig updates?
While doing an aptitude install aptitude/unstable, I ran a separate
command:
$ aptitude search session manag
aptitude: error while loading shared libraries: libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6.
