It looks like my problems with the Dec 5 & 6 installer builds is due to the CD
burner. The Dec 6 build (debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso
0faa173fe594afdb374944cfc6610743) doesn't exhibit the freezing behavior if I
burn the CD from another machine so I need to do some investigation of that
here.

It is 98a3624d0b2a23a3832b603a1a89ff3e (debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso - Dec
5 daily build)
I thought about this last night. I'd never had a problem with an ISO
download and have gotten lazy

Interesting. I tried the Dec 5 daily build today and the machine freezes as
soon as the installer boot menu app
When drive #2 - the "CDROM mounted in a cheapo external
USB enclosure" mentioned in the original report - is used on the machine
profiled in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=498834 the same
thing happens: the Etch installer runs fine, the Lenny installer has much
trouble.

I should add that cdrom-detect in the Sarge and Etch installers had no problem
with the firewire CDROM.

The same beta2 CD that failed on machine 1-3 is able to boot 2 others:
Machine #4: Dell Optiplex GX-1, CPU = Intel P3-450 (440BX chipset), RAM = 384MB
Machine #5: Acer TM110 tablet, CPU = Pentium M 900, RAM = 512 MB
Is it a coincidence that it fails on machines with an AMD processor and works
