I see this on three "native hardware" systems as well. The only thing I
have noticed is that it one test system I installed without KDE, it did
not have this problem. Are you running KDE by any chance?

After installing another ethernet adaptor and re-running the squeeze
upgrade from the beginning (after restoring dd partition images),
/etc/network/interfaces contained only an entry for eth1.
I have now added an entry for eth0.
