I did a bit more of digging, and I located the problem on the line 61
of alsa.c:

And I noticed that in dmesg:

I confirm this bug on my own setup, with kernel 2.6.33-2-amd64 and
awesfx 0.5.1a-1.1.
The midi card is recognized :
(kilo...@drizzt, 2) ~ $ aplaymidi -l

I have exactly the same problem on my ASRock motherboard.
There are work-arounds, but since it breaks boot and leaves the user
pretty confused, it would be nice to have a fix in a way or another.

kpathsea version 3.4.5

It worked after I upgraded tetex-bin to 3.0-14:
kpathsea version 3.5.4
Copyright (C) 1997 - 2004 K. Berry & O. Weber.
