try to first run something like
/etc/init.d/atop stop
to make start-stop-daemon clean its lockfiles etc. and afterwards
/etc/init.d/atop start

- a few days ago synaptic segfaulted on startup; strace didn't give
any insights (sometimes in a select() call, sometimes in poll()..)
