Looks like increasing the TTL (to 24h instead of just 10 minutes) fixed
this. I don't know why exactly your checks failed, but I'm happy now.

the issue should be fixed, rsync is able to run again. Most likely this
was caused by an IPv6 issue in the university's firewall.

I found out that "xrandr --dpi " indeed works in the sense that xterm
fonts get bigger.
However, I still do not know how to properly configure X so that a
high DPI display is properly used (e.g. in Firefox without plugins).

according to this[1] comment the module asus-wmi does work on newer ASUS
notebooks like my Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A). Because of this the Fn
