It appears that this problem is fixed in the current CVS:

I applied the patch listed in the link above to the current Debian
package and it did resolve the jpilot import problem.

Support for the Jpilot address book appears to be broken in this build. The
Sylpheed address book seems to import
categories from Jpilot, but not the content of the entries.

I did not see this mentioned anywhere and it will affect users upgrading
from Sarge to Etch if this version makes it to the release.
The configuration files for the new version of PAN are incompatible with
the old version. Current PAN users will loose
load it a
second time to properly set the ttyS* ports.
I will keep working on this and pass on what I find, but I would
appreciate any thoughts or ideas people may have.
