Just an update to let you know I am still working on this.
I am currently talking to the maintainer of ifupdown to see if we can
incorporate this into the ifupdown package somehow, which makes more
sense compared to creating an entire package for the init script.

being REJECTed, using the --reject-with options. The options mentioned
are the same as in iptables, but they don't seem to be working:
