Yes, it's completely off. Among know to me ways to "on" it is rebooting and
switch off/on laptop. Neither "esc" or anything else can help. (Maybe it's
gnome bug?)
And all this when "Do nothing" in gnome's power management is set. I think the
screen should be "on" in this mode, when lid is close

Reboot helps to switch on the screen after closing it.

The topic is finished. I compiled local ru_RU.UTF-8 and it's begin work
good.
It's fault of distribution Debian Sarge 3.1. Russian team does not compile
the local by default and program not starts. :-(

I also tried write --locale=ru_RU.UTF-8
