This problem disappeared when i switched from a display depth of 24 to a
display depth of 16. This is for a laptop with intel 82830 graphics -
sorry i forgot to update the bug report.

are all called with 'stop' argument - i didn't know that.
Now i'm thinking the problem was that wpa-ifupdown was being called
before umountnfs. Renaming S15wpa-ifupdown to S33wpa-ifupdown also fixes

The mesa updates came through to the uk testing repo, so i installed and
tested.
Unfortunately, blender still crashes before it gets going - but now the
details given by 'bt full' in gdb refer to the radeon driver.
I have attached the output from gdb.

I finally managed to get the output from gdb (having installed
libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg as suggested - sorry for such a long delay.
Many times the crash when running in gdb would freeze my system -
sometimes restarting X would work, other times having to just use the
power button).
