In Ubuntu, the attached patch was applied to fix a FTBFS:

I confused bibletime and bibledit when providing version info earlier.
Despite that, I do believe the issue is already fixed.
Please retest using bibletime 2.8.1-2 which is in Debian testing
(wheezy) if possible, and report results.

With valac-0.14 the package build successfully. So it's probably just a
matter of bumping the build dependency.
Unfortunately it's not quite that simple because neither valac-0.10 or
valac-0.12 seems to work and both seem to have a higher alternatives
priority than val

today I purged the defoma package as I apparently had no more reverse
depencencies.
After purging the package, I still had a /etc/defoma/ directory which
contained a file named /etc/defoma/fontconfig.subst-rule.
This file doesn't doesn't see
As requested on irc, here's the changes I've made to my local copy to
help debug things. This allows me to run a debug run in a few minutes
instead of running the entire test suite for hours under valgrind, and
it also supresses the vast majority of the valgrind errors.
