I remembered that ZFS v28 support was also merged in 8-STABLE upstream branch.
Maybe it would be better to upgrade zfsutils to 8-STABLE first? Based
on kernel-side experience I guess most of your work also applies
there. My guess is also that 8-STABLE zfsutils with v28 support would

Agreed. I'll do more testing and investigate. In the meantime I've
uploaded a gcc-4.5 built kfreebsd to experimental, so that this
combination can be tested

Following #644417 I've reverted kFreeBSD 8.2 builds to use GCC 4.4
with -fno-gcse flag, which was the only combination that fixed the
regression my my hardware.
Reenabling -fgcse would require finding and fixing a bug either in
kFreeBSD or in GCC, so far it is unknown which one.
