not a direct answer to your mail but very related and raising other
questions / problems:
jessie kernel already supports simplefb (simple framebuffer) together
with newer u-boot, specific u-boot environment and a custom device tree
it is possible to get a framebuffer.

it installed grub to the mbr without asking me

Just tested again with the current network installer. MBR is still
destroyed.
How to reproduce:
- say no to "want to install in mbr" question
- leave field empty when asked where to install grub
(this time i entered "doesnotexist" but mbr was destroyed anyway)
- continue without bootloader
- fin
