The screen shot in Attilio's bug report was done by me on my Indy. I
am not experienced in this beginning of the universe kind of code. But
I found the following clues which may be useful.

Hello,
Software speech synthesis is now commited in d-i. There is just a small
glitch left in the early steps of d-i:
- the language question gets asked in english, software speech asks it with an
english voice
- the country question gets
udhcpc has no verbose mode.
OSX bootpd get request and may be announced address.

Keeping up with things, here is a relatively simple patch. If the
opening of a template or config database file fails with ENOENT, it
tries to open it for writing and close it. In case of success, it
