You can try to append some failsafe parameters to cmdline before loading
installer, like
noapic nolapic acpi=off pci=noacpi nosmp vga=0x00

I have a old machine, a P3 Coppermine 600 MH, 512 M ram, 40 G hd.
I can install CrunchBang 10, but if I try to install Debian 6 or 7, it loads,
but when the installation begins then freezes.
