Do you have an option in the BIOS for "legacy USB (keyboard) support"?
If you do, it might be worth trying to change that setting.
We have had an other report (#276780) where disabling this solved a
similar keyboard issue.

Perhaps this will help you figure out which installer version I used which
worked for me with kernels 2.4 and 2.6 that I was unable to provide the
version for; uname-a says 2.6.7-1-386 #1 Thu Jul 8 -5:08:04 EDT
